LASIK surgery
This common type of laser eye surgery usually involves a quick recovery (no more than a day of blurred vision). Two lasers are used for LASIK, one to create a flap in the anterior part of the cornea, and then a second to reshape it to the correct focus.
A hinge of protective tissue is opened to allow the procedure to take place, which heals to the extent that the eye is functional again within 6 hours. By the day after, most people are well enough to work.
Surface laser treatment
(LASEK and TransPRK)
This treatment is better for patients with thinner corneas or who practice contact sports, and involves the removal of the surface skin layer on the front of the eye to use a laser to reshape the cornea underneath. The clear skin layer then regrows after a few days and smooths over in the following weeks.
This procedure avoids risks related with the creation of a flap in the cornea but could take weeks to achieve the best targeted vision without glasses.
SMILE surgery
This is an acronym for Small Incision Lenticule Extraction, and is it a minimally invasive procedure that corrects near-sightedness and/or low degrees of astigmatism.
Unlike LASIK surgery there is no need to create a flap on the cornea. Instead a keyhole is used, and this self-seals afterwards. This reduces the risk of any eye problems, and makes the procedure much more straight-forward.
