Alfonso is a highly trained and experienced consultant ophthalmic surgeon at London's Moorfields Eye Hospital, the largest provider of eye care in Europe which has been ranked in 2023 as the best academic and research Eye Centre in the world.
At Moorfields, he commonly manages complex cases, many of which are referred by colleagues due to his expertise in corneal diseases, corneal transplantation, cataract surgery and laser refractive surgery.
With more than 15 years of experience in Ophthalmology, he undertook his initial training in Barcelona, and later he completed two advanced sub-specialist training fellowships in the United Kingdom, first at Brighton and then at Moorfields, where he was appointed as an NHS substantive consultant.
During his training in the UK he achieved the Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologist (FRCOphth) and was awarded the Certificate in Laser Refractive Surgery (CertLRS). Additionally, he is one of the few UK surgeons who also obtained the Certification in Cataract and Refractive Surgery from the European Board of Ophthalmology (FEBOS-CR).
Alfonso has a passion for innovations and has introduced new techniques in corneal transplantation, which have helped many of his patients. At Moorfields he has set up the Osteo-Odonto-Keratoprosthesis (OOKP) Service. The OOKP is a highly specialised treatment to restore sight in blind people who are not suitable for a corneal transplant due to severe damage of the ocular surface. This complex treatment consists in making an artificial cornea from the patients' own tooth, and is only available in a few centres around the world.
As a consultant in a leading specialist training centre, Alfonso is also passionate about education and has trained many surgical fellows from the UK and all over the world in the finest techniques of cataract and corneal surgery.
His research publications include 3 book chapters and over 40 articles in ophthalmic medical journals. His standing as a Moorfields consultant ophthalmic surgeon means he is frequently invited as a speaker in national and international conferences.
